About Paula Backen and Beating Anger Birmingham

I really appreciate the opportunity to work with people who would like to find healthier ways to express their anger.  Anger doesn't go away, and if it isn't addressed, will result in relationships breaking up, careers failing, and, for some people, contact with loved ones disappearing.  I have tried and tested  methods to assist in changing those patterns of behaviour that cause much unhappiness.  I believe that my experience both as a parent and in my varied career as a business owner, therapist and hospital manager, give me the insight to help.   I have followed a varied career, but there has been a common thread throughout – a focus on communicating effectively with colleagues, clients and friends. Over twenty years practising as a communication therapist, mostly with adult clients who have neurological / psychiatric conditions.  I have experience of delivering a wide variety of training programmes both in groups and on an individual basis.  For 10 years, I successfully developed an IT support business in partnership with a technical team.  My recent work as a therapist has been strongly influenced by solution focussed therapy and I am keen to encourage my clients to draw on their own strengths to find ways to express their anger more assertively, with the help of the tools and strategies developed through the BA-AM programme.

I have gained many insights into my own skills through parenting two daughters over the past twenty years.  I am currently involved in voluntary work as Chair of Birmingham Cruse Bereavement Care. Originally a Londoner, and having spent many years living in the East Midlands, I arrived in Birmingham City Centre a couple of years ago, and believe I have discovered one of the best kept secrets – how fabulous Birmingham is!!

Why the Beating Anger approach is special:

  • Outstanding course-end satisfaction ratings: (95% say the courses met or exceeded expectations)
  • Developed over 12 years as part of the UK specialists The British Association of Anger Management.
  • Short, fixed delivery times – 14 hours individual coaching  or 25 hours group coaching, no long waiting lists.
  • Long lasting results – Surveys show average response time since course 23 months – satisfaction rating still 92% good/excellent.
  • Individual and group courses both use the same course material to ensure consistently high satisfaction ratings from all clients.
  • An honest programme. Clients don’t leave the programmes ‘cured’, but with tools and techniques that they know may take some months to fully implement and make second nature.
  • Excellent value for money.  Group courses only cost £20.66 per course hour. Outstanding value for a programme that delivers in excess of 90% ‘satisfied to delighted’ ratings.
  • Courses use a specific approach which addresses not only the sources and triggers of anger, but all our emotions as well as ways to approach historical anger patterns and understand how each of us is unique in our responses.

Beating Anger - Anger Management is Psycho EDUCATIONAL, not Psycho THERAPEUTIC.

The need for good Anger Management coaching is enormous. The current UK bill for Mental Health is over £100 billion per year and all the forecasts indicate an increase in stress and serious anger related problems during the current economic difficulties. Having asked for feedback from previous course participants we have been able to identify what makes our programmes more effective and construcive than previous methods they may have chosen.

Many BAAM clients have previously tried traditional therapeutic methods with only limited success. Anger Management coaching is a short-term programme with a very specific goal; to enable the client to manage his/her Anger & Stress problems successfully. Anger Management needs to be taught in a structured way that offers you tools, skills and methodologies that ensure successful Stress & Anger Management.

BAAM’s Anger Management programmes are structured to have a beginning, middle and end to the process. Anger Management coaching can be and is life changing if the lessons are applied, and clients frequently recognise the improvements from their Anger Management sessions very quickly. BAAM© Anger Management programmes are normally completed in a maximum of 30 group hours work or an optimum of 14 hours when attending 1:1 sessions.

Anger Management coaching is more than regular therapy in that it also provides the client with key life skills. Teaching clients to deal with stress is an integral part of anger management coaching that is frequently not covered by traditional therapeutic counselling. Training people to manage problem stress, anger and rage successfully offers benefits that go far beyond simply managing anger.

Being the recipient of successful Anger Management coaching can mean improved job security, more stable marriages, happier families, improved financial and social security and improved self confidence. Successful Anger Management coaching has the added benefit of making a real and positive contribution to the country by helping to reduce the financial impact on social services, child support services, the courts and, in certain cases, prison.
